Are you on the hunt for happiness? I was too. From my earliest days, I was weighed down with unhappiness. I felt there was a hole in my very soul, a gap so wide and dark I thought I would never emerge from its shadow. It took me nearly fifty years to find that elusive thing I call happiness.

This book is a set of stories from my childhood. Each story resulted in a lesson that built the bricks that ultimately became my fortress of happiness. Of course, I didn’t know I was building a fortress at the time. I was just desperately putting together pieces of a puzzle I didn’t really understand, in order to cope with this challenge called living.

Soren Kierkegaard famously said, "Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” I think that is how I built my understanding of happiness. I unknowingly accumulated the essential happiness components, but until I looked back over my many years, I didn’t understand how they fit together. Now I do.

I hope these little vignettes will prove insightful to you. And I hope they make you laugh. Mostly, I hope that by reading this book, you will be able to find the valuable nuggets in your own life to build your own fortress of happiness.
